🌀 Plot Summary (1–2 Sentences)

This story follows Daisy Ramona as she takes us on a joyful ride through her neighborhood with her beloved Papi. Along the way, she shares her favorite places, glimpses of her community’s history, and reflects on how, even as things change, her home will always be wherever her father is.

✅ Why I Chose This Book

I selected this book from the Tejas Star list because it immediately resonated with me. It reminded me of the special bond I share with my own dad, those simple yet meaningful moments we spent together, like getting snacks or just enjoying time with one another. I saw myself in Daisy, and that emotional connection made the story even more powerful.

🔍 Elements

1. Illustrations
The illustrations are rich in cultural detail and community pride. I loved how accurately the murals, buildings, snow cones, and people in the neighborhood were depicted. Zeke Peña's art truly brought Daisy’s world to life, creating an immersive and vibrant reading experience for children and adults alike.

2. Theme

While the story beautifully highlights the strong father-daughter bond, it also touches on broader themes like community, cultural heritage, gentrification, and the evolution of familiar spaces. The book acknowledges change while celebrating the constants that give us a sense of home and belonging.

3. Characters
Daisy and her Papi are characters that many immigrant families can relate to. I saw a reflection of my own experiences in how Daisy’s father works hard yet still makes time for her, and in the little traditions they share, just the two of them. Their relationship feels authentic and heartfelt, making this book a touching celebration of family and identity.
